Pros

Smallest 10180 that I've found – weights next to nothing

Minor issue – a few sharp edges at the tail, near the grooves for the split ring
Need to take a little care when changing batteries, I find it it relatively easily to cross-thread the threads.
Beam is pure flood with no hotspot – brightness fades off quite quickly with distance
Tritium seems quite exposed – I'd be a little worried it might break with keychain duty. I might try and encase it with some Norland 61, if I get a chance.
Difficult to operate one handed, as it's so small

Versus the Quantum DD

-The DQG spy is significantly smaller and lighter than the Quantum DD.
-In terms of usability, I prefer the DQG Spy over the Quantum DD. I find with the QTC in the Quantum DD, you have to tighten it with a fair bit of force to get it to max brightness. The lack of decent knurling, compounds this issue further, as it's harder to get good finger support to tighten the light firmly.
-The tritium you can install into the Quantum DD, is longer in length. And since it is larger, it's also potentially brighter. Also, you can install two pieces of tritium in the Quantum DD without affecting tail-standing ability. With the DQG Spy, if you install a second rod of tritium, you potentially lose the split ring attachment.
-I feel the Quantum DD has a more modern futuristic look. I feel the DQG spy is more utilitarian in appearance.
-DQG has a wider and a “pure flood” beam. My version of the Quantum DD, is still a fairly floody beam but has a slight hotspot in the centre.
-Quantum DD comes with a charger. You have you source your own charger with the DQG Spy.

Other thoughts:

There is also a brass version that is available for even cheaper! The DQG Fairy. Basically, it has the same 'guts' as the DQG Spy, but with a different exterior. Personally, I feel it looks rather plain, so I'm going to give this one a miss.

On my wish list, I'd like to see a version with a reflector or a more focused TIR optic. This will make the flashlight a little more longer, but I'd be happy to accept the trade off. The floody beam is actually quite useful for keychain duties, where it's mostly used to illuminate objects at close quarters. But realistically do we need a keychain light to blast 120 lumens, but only lasts for >10mins at this level? The reason why we (or at least I) have have such an overpowered keychain light is the blast the socks off the “unilluminated”, with their piddly 5-15 lumen button cell light/mag solitaire/iphone LED. A more collimated beam with a brighter hot spot, looks more impressive than a floody beam, particularly if your lighting up an object more than a few metres away.

Ideally, my perfect 10180 flashlight, would be something like the Modamag Drake, but without the PWM, a better looking exterior and an updated LED emitter .

DQG Spy 10180 Photos!

Hi, yes, it has been a while since my last post!

I've just received a new 10180 keychain flashlight; the DQG Spy 10180!  This thing is an amazingly small beast!  Smaller than any other 10180 flashlight around.

I thought I'd share some photos, first up.  Hope to get some thoughts up about it in the near future.

Custom Keychain Lights to Look Out For

At the moment there are a couple of custom or semi-custom keyring lights that are in the process of being designed and made.  If you are interested, I'd suggest you subscribe to the forum threads and follow the progress of these lights.  They can often sell out quickly, so keep and eye out on them.

First one is the new variant of the 38DD from Steve Ku at cpfmarketplace.  The previous runs of the 38DD were in titanium, but the new run of this light is going to be in stainless steel.  As a result of this, the cost is significantly less, estimated to be $60-85.  The design has changed a little, have a  look at Steve's facebook page for some CAD renderings of the new 38DD.

Here are a few preliminary specifications from the cpfmarketplace thread:

Sapphire lens.
Smooth and spot TIR.
XP-G 1c cool, 5b neutral, 7b high CRI.
2 trit slots, just about every color trit you've ever seen is available.
3.2mm hole

Having one of the 38DD from the second titanium run, there were a few potential issues that I feel I need to point out before  recommending this light.
-Even if you choose the spot TIR option, the light is pretty floody, with a large hotspot.  This makes the flashlight seem less bright than what it is (often people perceive a light with less lumens, but tighter hotspot to be 'more' bright).  Given a choice, I would prefer the light to be slightly less floody.  YMMV, you may prefer a floody light for keychain purposes.
-I'm not 100% convinced of  the benefits of QTC.  In my sample of the 38DD, I find it takes a lot of force to fully compress the QTC for max brightness.  If you compress the light too much, you can dent the 10180 battery.  Hopefully this issue can be addressed in the new run.

The next light is a from a new maker who has popped up on candlepowerforums.  He certainly has grand goals which push the boundaries.  The flashlight is still being designed but the maker has taken in a lot of input from CPF.  I've found it enjoyable following the thread, seeing the interaction between the maker and CPF.

This light is called the MBI torpedo and it has the goal of providing 500 lumens from a AAA sized light.  There's a lot of doubts on whether this is possible and whether it is practical.  Have a look at the thread for more discussion on this.

Here are some preliminary specifications which are subject to change:

The 'Drake' (by modamag)

I'd like to share with you guys some photos and info of my current keychain light... the 'Drake'


 Specifications:

The drake is a custom light made my modamag (at candlepowerforums), it runs on special '10180' sized rechargeable lithium ion batteries.  Unfortunately he is no longer making this light, but you may be able to find one second hand on the marketplace forums.

According the maker, the drake measures 33mm x 13mm, with the aluminium version weighing only 6 grams. (EDIT: when I measure my drake (fully closed) it actually measures 36-37mm in length)  It is available in either aluminium or titanium, with the titanium coming in a variety of finishes (bare Ti, TiCN, AlTiN, TiN or 'Diamond' coating).  I have the cheaper, aluminium chrome coated version of the drake.  The LED in the drake is protected by a scratch resistant sapphire lens.  In the tail of the drake, there is a slot for an optional tritium marker.

There also exists a slightly larger version of the drake, called the draco.  The draco runs on slightly longer '10280' sized li-ion cells.  The benefits of using the larger battery is a longer run-time and a brighter high mode.  The drake and draco share the same head, only the battery tube is different in size.

The drake offers a low, high and user defined mode.  The user defined setting is chosen from 10 different levels of brightness.  The light remembers the last mode you have used, if you leave the light on at that level for over 1 second.  To switch between the various modes, you need to turn the light on/off in less than 1 second.  Click on the picture for more details on the user interface.



 I find the lumen and run-time information of the drake is quite hard to quantify, as the information on this is quite old and the emitter has changed with time.  From estimations, the latest version with a Cree XRE-R2, would have a maximum of 100+ lumens (probably an underestimate) with a runtime of 10-15 minutes.  The low on the drake should last around 4 hours, and I would estimate it to be ~5 lumens.  I usually have the user defined mode, set at level 3 or 4, as I find this is a good balance between brightness and run-time.  Previous run-time tests with the draco, suggest level 3 should give ~160 minutes and level 4 ~80 minutes

Keychain usage:

I have had the drake on my keychain for over a year now, the chrome finish on the aluminium version has held up relatively well.  There are a few minor scratches on it, which are only noticeable upon close inspection.  I would expect the AlTiN, TiN or Diamond coatings to hold up even better, as they have a higher hardness than the chrome coating.

I find the beam from the drake is good for keychain purposes, it is relatively wide and floody.  The diminuitive size and weight makes the drake less noticeable when carrying it on a keychain. The amount of light that comes from a flashlight of this size is quite amazing.  There are very few other multi-mode flashlights that offer this amount of brightness, in a package so small.

Constructive criticism:

I do have to say, the brightness of the the drake on high is not well regulated and brightness does tend to decline as the battery drains.  This is not really the fault of the drake, but merely the limits on what is possible with such a small battery.  Personally, I would not recommend running the drake on high for prolonged periods, as the light gets quite hot and the heat may damage the LED or driver.  In my mind the high mode is predominantly there for 'showing-off' purposes.

I find it can be difficult at times, to turn on the light one-handed.  One of the reasons for this is the placement of the knurling (those grooves and indents which give you grip when holding the light).  Greater knurling on the head of of the light would make turning it on, easier.

My pet peeve of the drake is with the driver (electronics which control the LED).  The driver uses quite noticeable PWM to regulate the light.  PWM is where the light flashes very quickly to regulate the brightness.  When shining the light on rapidly moving objects, rather than one continuous picture, the movement can be seen as quick 'stop motion' pictures.

The user interface for switching modes can be tricky to get used to. If you turn the light on/off too quickly, it will switch to the next mode, the next time you turn your light on.  This would be less of a problem if the time delay for memorisation is reduced from 1 second to 0.5 seconds.


Alternatives to consider:

Since the drake is no longer being made, some other lights that run on the 10180 battery format:

Lummi Wee (only one mode but you can choose from either 25/50/100 lumens)
Steve Ku's 38DD (VBC direct drive - gets brighter as you twist it tighter)
peak eiger 10180 (only one mode, but can select from a range of options)
